DESCRIPTION:This seminar session takes Mary Wollstonecraft’s critique of 
 women’s education in Chapter II of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman 
 as a point of departure to examine the relationship between education\, ra
 tional autonomy\, and gender equality. At its heart lies a fundamental que
 stion: what conditions must be in place for education to become a genuine 
 practice of emancipation and a foundation of democratic life? In the conte
 xt of the Wissenschaft gegen Faschismus action week\, the session will bri
 ng this question into the present to explore the political stakes of educa
 tion and the struggle for academic freedom. Against the backdrop of contem
 porary efforts to curtail gender-related research and equality initiatives
 \, we will ask who has the power to determine what can be researched\, tau
 ght\, and recognised as legitimate knowledge\, and what is lost when the f
 reedom of academic inquiry and the emancipatory promise of education come 
 under threat.
