DESCRIPTION:"Facebook\, over and over again\, has shown it chooses profit o
 ver safety"\, said former Facebook employee Frances Haugen in 2021. As par
 t of our seminar on "Algorithmic Media" we are going to screen the recent 
 movie "The Social Reckoning" that portrays how Frances Haugen turned from 
 a Data Scientist at the company to a whistleblower concerned about the far
 -reaching societal and democratic impacts of the Facebook curation algorit
 hm that promises to deliver "Meaningful-Social-Interactions" (MSI) but has
  more often than not resulted in hate speech\, polarization and democratic
  backsliding. Prior to the screening\, there will be a short intro on algo
 rithmic harms in today's public spheres and the role of heavily concentrat
 ed social media companies. The screening will take place at the Cinema & K
 urbelkiste Programmkino\, Warendorferstr. 45. Tickets can be purchased via
  the Cinema ticketing shop.
