Fascism, Cutbacks, and Public Education: What can we learn from Student Movements in Latin America?

Vor Ort

The Student Council of the Latin American Institute invites you to a film screening and panel discussion on student movements, authoritarianism, and attacks on public education in Latin America. We will begin with the short documentary AYOTZINAPA: MEMORIA Y RESISTENCIA, which addresses the kidnapping and forced disappearance of 43 students from the Rural Teachers’ College of Ayotzinapa in Mexico. The case will serve as a starting point for a broader discussion on repression, resistance, and the political role of students and universities. After the screening, a panel discussion will bring together people with experience in student and university movements in Latin America. We will discuss what far-right and authoritarian governments have meant for public education, students, and academic life while also focussing on what German and European movements can learn from Latin American experiences. The discussion will be held in English.
