Does democracy matter? In this session (part of a Master-level seminar on comparative democracy) we will take an x-centered perspective and study the consequences of democracy. Do democracies lead to better economic outcomes? Do they lead to better societies? Are people in democracies happier? What are the effects on inequality? We will read and discuss a review published in the Annual Review of Political Science and a short overview chapter, as well as papers based on your own literature review. Required readings: Gerring, John, Carl Henrik Knutsen, and Jonas Berge. 2022. Does Democracy Matter? Annual Review of Political Science 25: 357-375. Møller, Jørgen & Svend-Erik Skaaning. 2026.
