On the Suspension of Morality
Vortrag · Vor Ort · Geschichte · Interdisziplinär · Kunst & Gestaltung · Soziologie
The lecture begins with an introduction to Sisto Sisti (1906–1981) and his work. Sisti was a photographer and factory worker at the Montecatini chemical plant in Sinigo-Sinich, South Tyrol, from the 1930s to the late 1950s. He declared himself an anti-fascist, but his photographs often capture Roman salutes and regime celebrations. Furthermore, throughout the dictatorship, he maintained close ties with local fascist officials. Sisti’s life and work thus allow for a deeper exploration of the artist's role in the face of illiberal demands, between necessity and freedom of expression. The presentation will therefore end up addressing issues such as the influence of right-wing political forces on education and on the freedom to teach and dissent, the structural opportunism of the cultural and creative industries, the reputation economy, attitude-behavior consistency, and other contradictions typical of our world.
