Postcolonial Criticism of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre
Seminar · Vor Ort · Gender Studies · Literaturwissenschaft und Sprecherziehung
Kurssitzung des Seminars "Finding a Voice: Women's Writing 19th/ 20th Century". In this session we'll take a look at postcolonial criticism of Charlotte Brontë's seminal novel Jane Eyre. While young Jane speaks up against sexist, classist systems that oppress her and want to break her spirit, the portrayal of Rochester's wife Bertha is full of colonialist stereotypes that turn her into the melodramatic trope of the 'tragic mulatta'.
