What Makes a Fascist Man? Conceptions of Fascist Masculinities in Art
Seminar · Vor Ort · Kunstgeschichte
Centring artworks and visual culture of the 1930s and early 1940s, the seminar session examines the imagination and construction of fascist masculinities. Looking at sculpture and propaganda imagery from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, such as Arno Breker’s monumental statues, it asks how the idealised male body was staged as hard, “natural” and heroic, and how these images served to legitimise violence and exclusion.
