In mid-November, the CARMAH lab at the institute for European Ethnology deepens its connections with the inherit. heritage in transformation Käte Hamburger Kolleg in Berlin through a special writing workshop and conversation with anthropologist Alex Ungprateeb Flynn. A professor of art and anthropology at UCLA, Flynn has conducted long-term research with Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement (MST), the largest movement of its kind in the world. Drawing on his new monograph, Pathways to Utopia (Indiana University Press, 2025), Flynn will reflect on the possibilities and challenges of ethnographic writing, exploring questions of narrative form, aesthetic experimentation, and the relationship between writing and political imagination. The conversation will also address the pressures and expectations that shape academic writing more broadly: how we find our voices, negotiate the demands of publication, and make space for more experimental forms of scholarly expression.
