"Facebook, over and over again, has shown it chooses profit over safety", said former Facebook employee Frances Haugen in 2021. As part of our seminar on "Algorithmic Media" we are going to screen the recent movie "The Social Reckoning" that portrays how Frances Haugen turned from a Data Scientist at the company to a whistleblower concerned about the far-reaching societal and democratic impacts of the Facebook curation algorithm that promises to deliver "Meaningful-Social-Interactions" (MSI) but has more often than not resulted in hate speech, polarization and democratic backsliding. Prior to the screening, there will be a short intro on algorithmic harms in today's public spheres and the role of heavily concentrated social media companies. The screening will take place at the Cinema & Kurbelkiste Programmkino, Warendorferstr. 45. Tickets can be purchased via the Cinema ticketing shop.
