Schlolar(ship) at Risk: Academic Freedom, Resistance, and Responsibility
Vortrag · Vor Ort · Interdisziplinär · Regionalwissenschaften · fachübergreifend · New Area Studies
Speakers: Prof. Andrea Fleschenberg dos Ramos Pinéu (IAAW, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and Dr. Sarah Wessel (Head of the Berlin Center for Global Engagement, Berlin University Alliance) Academic freedom is increasingly under threat from authoritarianism, democratic backsliding, armed conflict, and the restructuring of higher education. But what does it mean when not only scholars, but scholarship itself is at risk? This talk and discussion explores the challenges facing academic freedom, from the persecution and displacement of scholars to the destruction of academic institutions, the suppression of knowledge, and self-censorship. Drawing on examples from different regional contexts, it examines forms of academic resistance and transnational solidarity, while raising questions about the responsibilities of universities, researchers, and students in defending academic freedom. The event is part of the introductory lecture series of the MA Asian and African Studies at the Institute of Asian and African Studies (IAAW), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
